UnBought and UnBossed is a tribute to the spirit and determination of late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who was the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for President of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972). Chisholm declared herself to be a representative of all people and committed to serving as a leader who would remain “unbought and unbossed.

Our annual signature event celebrates the women in our community and the girls we serve through our SHE, She Can, She Will program. The teen girls participate in this after-school program to learn more about women who have made an impact throughout history in their communities. These women become mentors to our girls, building the mentor/mentee relationship beyond the program. During this event, the mentees present their understanding of past, present, and future generations of female leadership by honoring their mentors. Through this program, our girls develop their interviewing, research, writing, and presentation skills.

UnBought & UnBossed is a time to recognize women for what they have done for the girls whom they have mentored, the community, and their families. Enjoy reading through the list of amazing women Girls Inc. of Chattanooga has honored since 2005.
